Pete Doherty heads to jail

Pete Doherty has been sentenced to 14 weeks in prison after breaching a probation order he received last year.

The Babyshambles frontman was jailed for "breach of time-keeping, non-compliance of his order and using different drugs", according to a spokesperson for West London Magistrates Court.

Given a four-month suspended sentence in October 2007 for a series of drug and motoring offences, the 29-year-old singer was warned not to break the law and to comply with regular visits to the court so they could monitor his progress on a drug rehabilitation programme.

The singer himself expressed surprise at the time at having yet again escaped jail after a series of court appearances, saying: ""Eh? You must be joking."

Today Doherty's luck finally ran out, as his record label Parlophone confirmed: "Peter Doherty was sentenced to a total of 14 weeks in jail for being in breach of his probation order. Unfortunately Peter has had to postpone his show at the Royal Albert Hall on April 26th."

The statement added that there would be attempts made to reschedule the show at the RAH, and offered an apology to Doherty's fans. "Peter was very much looking forward to the show and would like to offer his sincerest apologies to all his fans and to all those concerned."
